Goat Island Lighthouse Keeper Lost
(May 2002)
We are all deeply saddened by
the loss of Dick Curtis,
who for eight years was the
keeper of Goat Island Light. Dick's body
was found on the northeast side
of Goat Island at 7:30 a.m., Monday, May 27,
after a two-day search. Apparently
the victim of a boating accident,
Dick had been reported missing
on Saturday. Two of the four dogs thought
to be in the boat with Dick
swam to safety on Goat Island; the other two were
never found.
Dick will be deeply missed by
all of us who were lucky enough to
know him. Always ready
with a story, a joke, a smile, or a helping hand,
Dick was well-liked by all who
met him. In his role as keeper of Goat Island,
Dick greeted many, many visitors
to the lighthouse during the eight
years he was in residence on
the island.
