Volunteer Opportunities

 

The Island Stewards

Monitor and report on all islands. Submit regular stewardship reports.
Keep track of camping, permits, inspections, fire pits, campsites, violations
and related matters. Organize cleanups when needed. Maintain the
building on Fort Island. Maintain island trails.

The Fund Raisers

To create the best, most accurate list possible of potential interested persons
in order to facilitate fundraising through membership or events.

To search out individuals, corporations or grants that can help to finance
the Trust in its many endeavors.

To assist in the writing of grants to various foundations or companies
in order to help the Trust in its fundraising and protection goals.

Program Directors

To promote a program with as many hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts,
and general rentals as possible through which one dollar per nights stay
will be donated by the sponsoring businesses or individuals to the Trust.

To create, develop and oversee a program to inform the public, and promote
an ongoing campaign, involving planned giving, bequests and how other
such financial arrangements would provide meaningful long term benefits
to the Trust.

 

Financial Coordinators

To oversee the Trust portfolio, make decisions concerning its relative
security and rate of return, make decisions concerning the purchase or sale
of stock and promote the addition of other resources into the Trust’s
endowment.

 

Marketing Directors

The marketers will work to create a line of Trust products which could
be sold at events, at the headquarters, through the mail or on line to produce
income for the Trust. They will work to develop the website as an income
producing entity for the Trust.

 

Secretarial Staff

To work on Trust mailings, helping to stuff envelopes, paste on stamps and
try to get mass mailings out in a timely fashion.

 

The Trust Writers

Will use their skills to write articles concerning Trust activities and events,
history or mission, for use in a regular newsletter or on the website. A goal
of three newsletters a year and a frequent update of the website is desired.

 

The Trust Photographers

Will provide beautiful photographs of Trust holdings, or the plants and
animals found on Trust properties, for use in publications, on the
website, in shows, for display in the headquarters, for sale, or to
convey through images to the public some of the wonderful things the
Trust is preserving for all time.

 

The Special Events Committees

To organize the various special events that will help to fund
and promote the Trust. These could include, but aren’t limited
to, such things as regular monthly slide shows or talks,
lighthouse or property tours, lectures or group discussions.

The Phillip H. Matthews Committee will work to create a fun,
successful event (lobster bake or steak bake) on the third Sunday
in August. The committee will determine the site, the food, the
entertainment, the door prizes, raffles and all similar details. It
will also be responsible for ticket sales.

The Trust Auction Committee will work to collect goods,
services, arts and crafts, or whatever else they deem appropriate
in order to hold a successful and entertaining yearly auction.
They will determine the date, location, theme and attend to all
other details.

The Twelfth Night Committee will create, promote and
oversee an annual Trust Christmas party which will serve
as both a fundraiser and an enjoyable outreach promotion of
the Trust.

The “Trust Bakers” will be willing to provide delicious foods
and treats in order to enhance Trust events.

The Trust Historians

To create an historical record for each Trust property, using a separate
Notebook for each, recording the history, environmental qualities
(flora, fauna, etc.), appropriate maps and how each property came to the
Trust. Add yearly stewardship reports to the records.

Create and maintain scrapbooks documenting the history and ongoing
activities of the Trust.

Scan Trust photos and historical photos into the computer and into the
appropriate files or onto the appropriate disks, edit and enhance. Create
power point or slide shows from the saved materials.

 

The Archeology Group

Making the contacts, finding the funds and assisting in archeological
digs on Stage, Fort, and Trotts Islands, Tyler Brook or any other
important or appropriate location. To record any evidence found
through research of the early history of any Trust holding.

 

The Organizers

To oversee the proper filing of Trust records, documents, letters and maps
in an organized and efficient manner. To oversee the organization and use
of the Stephen H. Emmons Lending Library.

 

The Technology Group

To oversee the Trust’s use of technology. To assess the
current equipment, create the best means of maintaining our
information and keeping in touch with our members. They will
work to keep the website active, up to date and interesting.
They will work to integrate the island weather station onto the
website, explore the use of tide charts, weather forecasts or other
relationships (with TV. stations for instance) that could improve and/or
promote the site. They will assist the staff and volunteers with their
questions surrounding computers, PowerPoint systems, etc.

 

The School Outreach Program

To create and oversee a program whereby school children will
“adopt a property” for a year or semester. Each class will be
matched with an age appropriate property on which lessons in
science, history and relevant topics can take place, in the hopes
that such an experience will not only promote learning, but
will also provide participants with a “sense of place”, knowledge
of their home town and the basis on which future stewards of the
land will be created. Each class or property will also have
matched with it an educator (or educators) who will work with
the class teachers in the development and implementation of the
program and the use of the Trust environmental center resources.:


The Trust Painters

Will be willing to give of their body and souls when asked to see that
Trust properties are properly painted and looking good. Painting will
generally be needed for Goat Island Lighthouse, the tower and boathouse,
the Emmon’s Preserve headquarters, the house and barn, and on the
Fort Island building. Future acquisitions might later be included.

 

The Trust Gardeners

To maintain the grounds and gardens of the Trust headquarters, to
maintain the grounds and plantings of Bryant Point and to
beautify any other appropriate Trust holding.

 

The Fishermen

To check out the Batson River ecosystem to determine if it would support
Trout in order to add fly fishing as passive recreational use for the property.

 

The “Trust Builders”

Will use their skills to maintain and repair Trust property and equipment.
Needs will range from repairs to the Goat Island Light and its
buildings to work on the Emmons Preserve. Adding shelves, fixing
damage, installing windows, sheet rocking, building benches, trail bridges,
or even fixing up the Trust’s old wagon are all possibilities.

The Boat Builders will work to keep the Trust’s boats safe and in good
working order.

 

The Trust Mechanics

Will work to keep the boat’s engines in good working
order and will see that “Iris” runs well, is well maintained and is properly
stored in the summer and winter.

 

 

 

The Environmental Center Stewards

To oversee the upkeep and use of the Trust headquarters.
To suggest policy concerning the use of the property, and to establish the

conditions and/or fees for such use. To check on the requirements needed
for a rental and to make sure that the facility has been property left after its
use. To properly furnish the building, maintain the grounds and see to the
overall neatness and organization of the building. To make sure that all of
the building’s systems (heat, security, etc.) are working properly.

 

The Trail Stewards

To build and maintain trails on Trust properties including the Tyler Brook
Preserve, The Emmons Preserve and those to be created by the
Kennebunkport Greenbelt Initiative (working in cooperation with the
Steward and appropriate committees). Facilitate passive recreation along
the trail system (hiking, cross country skiing, etc.).

 

Goose Rocks Beach Stewards

To monitor and report on all beach activity including the impact
of such things as; people, pets, fires, and boats. To monitor the health of the
dune grass, changes in the least tern and piping plover populations, spread of
invasive plants, effects of storms, etc.. To make appropriate
recommendations toward maintaining and improving the health and
condition of the beach with a willingness to implement those
recommendations if and when approved by the Board of Trustees.

 

The Town Forest Committee

To discuss and make recommendation to the Board of Trustees
about all issues concerning the “town forest”, Steele lands, and any other
adjoining lands that might be added to the Trust’s holdings in the Northwest
section of Kennebunkport. To decide where trails should go, what should be
left as wildlife habitat, and what the rules and regulations should be. To
create and maintain a proper forest management plan and implement it when
deemed appropriate. To work with the trail stewards toward creating and
maintaining trails. To work with the Trust and appropriate authorities to
enforce rules. To work with the proper agents of the Town of
Kennebunkport in order to fulfill the obligations and intent of the “town
forest” transfer. To research what lands could, or should, be added to this
area of protection.

 

The Trust Parks Committee

To oversee the use and care of the Rivergreen, Durrell’s Park and
any future green that might be added to the Trust’s holdings. To suggest
updates to policy and to enforce existing rules and regulations. To maintain a
calendar for booking the use of the greens and to give out the proper materials
to those wishing to use the space.
